About the Author

Over his past two decades of experience, Jeff Patton has learned there’s no “one right way” to design and build software, but there’s lots of wrong ways. Jeff makes use of over 15 years experience with a wide variety of products from on-line aircraft parts ordering to electronic medical records to help organizations improve the way they work. Where many development processes focus on delivery speed and efficiency, Jeff balances those concerns with the need for building products that deliver exceptional value and marketplace success.Jeff has focused on Agile approaches since working on an early Extreme Programming team in 2000. In particular he specializes in integrating effective user experience design and product management practice with strong engineering practice.Jeff currently works as an independent consultant, agile process coach, product design process coach, and instructor. Current articles, essays, and presentations on variety of topics in Agile product development can be found at www.AgileProductDesign.com and in Alistair Cockburn’s Crystal Clear. Jeff is founder and list moderator of the agile-usability Yahoo discussion group, a columnist with StickyMinds.com and IEEE Software, a Certified Scrum Trainer, and winner of the Agile Alliance’s 2007 Gordon Pask Award for contributions to Agile Development.

I guess I'm just a template zombie -- while the book provides a ton of tips and advice, it does a poor job of explaining the basic form of a user story map. For me, I first need to understand the framework and its elements, and then I'm receptive to hearing about how to build it, what to do and not to do and so on.Here, the book provides a lot of "why" (which I can tolerate) and a lot of "how" (which I would welcome eventually, but very little "what". For an impatient bugger like me, that's frustrating.

I highly recommend this book to anyone on a software development team. The book is about "User Story Mapping" which is the process of using sticky notes to map out what software to build, but its more than that. This book is about how to communicate with your team in a software development world. A lot of the points made are sort of common-sense, but the book is an easy read and has a good amount of information. This book is aimed more at Product Managers, but I think its extremely relevant for anyone in the software development process. I'm in QA and thought it was rather insightful.

It's rare to find a book you truly find both useful and interesting to read from cover to cover and Jeff Patton does a terrific job to keep building up interest and maintain great continuity throughout the book, pointing out useful references to specific points in previous chapters, highlighting key concepts and reminding of you of things you've read so that with the current material they make more sense. As a seasoned developer and agile practitioner, this book has been a very welcome addition to my library, and one that I will gladly recommend to friends, colleagues and interested parties.

As a non tech tech team leader I have been searching for a simple way to continuously share understanding of the market/customer expectations with the dev team - I want this front of mind - and despite plenty of 'out of the building' activity - product releases kept falling short of my expectations - the big picture and UX flow was patchy. Our product is large and ambitious in vision with multiple stakeholders (often with divergent viewpoints) and getting caught in the details of micro features very real and challenging. Reading "User Story Mapping" was an instant aha - I knew that mapping was the missing tool for building understanding across the team - and it has worked incredibly well and hope our maps will continue to evolve in their usefulness as our main meeting room is unlikely to ever look the same again. Thanks Jeff Paton!

Don't embark on a project without reading this book. I'm in software, and I see so many people off on wold goose-chases in their product development process, following their bliss instead of turning their bliss into an agile development process that creates true bliss and discovers true value. Thanks Jeff for putting this information in one place. Took me one round trip flight to read through it in enough detail to change my management style, and I refer to it repeatedly.

This book fills in some of the gaps left most Agile training courses, and I cannot recommend it enough. It offers some solid pointers for how to organize your ideas and have the conversations that get everyone on the same page. This is not a technical guide for how to write user stories that replace requirements, rather it's a holistic approach to reaching common understanding and documenting the results of those conversations in a way that gets a quality product developed. I would recommend this book for business and IT.

Rock solid book on User Story Mapping and how it fits into the larger product management discipline. I strongly recommend this book, along with Inspired by Marty Cagan INSPIRED: How to Create Tech Products Customers Love. And when you're implementing story maps, I'd recommend looking at StoriesOnBoard and CardBoardIt - both are virtual whiteboards for story mapping. We selected StoriesOnBoard as being more closely tied with the methodology and approach outlined in the book.

Good book, good random ideas about the overall process of product development, but disorganized and bloated. The first half of the book felt like it's therr to increase the page count. One can tell if the author is writing in a slow pase on purpose. He tried to make too many little jokes, and the writing style was too relaxed. That, and I don't really remember getting anything from if.The first part deserves 2 stars, the second part gets 4.In the end, although even the second half doesn't seem organized enough, and it's not really about story maps, there are lots of good ideas there. The ideas however are nothing too original, and if you watched the video series "how to start a startup", or read other books (I can recommend "The effective engineer"), you'll meet the ideas there too.Good book, will make you google a lot for software for building good story maps. Try some spreadsheet software - can do wonders...you don't need stuff that's too fancy :p
